What is listed building consent?

Listed building consent is permission that is needed for any works taking place at a listed property or property in a conversation area that might affect the character of the building. This can include alternations, extensions and demolition. 

Listed building consent is not the same as planning permission and is normally applied for separately to any planning permission. It is actually a criminal offense to carry out any works to a listed building without obtaining permission first. 

The purpose of listing building consent is to ensure the any changes made to a building are sympathetic to the it's character and the surrounding area. No works can be started until consent has been granted, so this it's important that this is addressed at the start of the project.
